England captain Harry Kane drew the ire of fans despite the Three Lions beating the Republic of Ireland 2-0 in their UEFA Nations League opener in Dublin on Saturday. The Bayern Munich striker was subbed off for Jarrod Bowen six minutes from time.
The game, though, was all but over by then as Lee Carsley started his reign as the Three Lions' interim manager with a resounding win. Declan Rice opened the scoring inside 11 minutes before Jack Grealish doubled their lead 15 minutes later.
However, less than seven weeks after his laboured outing in the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain in Berlin, Kane turned in another unimpressive display in front of goal. Fans have had a go at the former Tottenham Hotspur man, with one calling him 'useless,' tweeting:
"Harry Kane gets slower every time I watch him. Bloody useless."
Another reckons he should 'retire':
"Harry Kane needs to retire man"
There were similar reactions from other fans, with one tweeting:
"Harry Kane for England needs to end in 2024."
Another wrote:
"When will England be free from the shackles of Harry Kane?"
One fan posted:
"I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Harry Kane must be a nightmare for a creative player 95% of the time. Haaland makes runs, gives you something to aim for; Kane just f**king sits there."
It's pertinent to note that Harry Kane is England's top scorer with 66 goals in 99 games.
"The lads have to take a lot of credit" - Interim England boss Lee Carsley
Interim England boss Lee Carsley - taking over from Gareth Southgate (albeit temporarily) - after Euro 2024, was all praise for his players for the team's win in the Irish capital.
Following the defeat to Spain seven weeks ago - which made the Three Lions the first team to lose back-to-back European Championship finals - they are back to winning ways.
"I thought it was good in parts," Carsley told ITV (via BBC) as he analysed his team's performance.
"You've seen some of the things we've tried to do. The lads have to take a lot of credit, all of the credit. I think we've showed we've got some real talent and we can be really pleased with the clean sheet as well."
The Three Lions next take on Finland at home on Tuesday at the Wembley as the September international break draws to a close.
