Kylian Mbappe's France qualified for the Euro 2024 quarterfinals after a closely fought Round of 16 clash with Kevin De Bruyne's Belgium on Monday (July 1) in Dusseldorf. Both teams started on an equal footing with the pendulum swinging frequently.
However, luck was with Les Bleus, as substitute Randal Kolo Muani took a shot at Koen Casteels' goal in the 85th minute, and the ball deflected off Jan Vertonghen to wrongfoot the goalkeeper and cannon into the net.
It's France's third goal at this Euros but none of them from the feet of a French player from open play. Two of them have been own goals, while the one against Poland came from Kylian Mbappe from the penalty spot.
Giorgio Chiellini made a hilarious claim after France's win over Belgium, courtesy of Vertonghen's own goal. According to the veteran Italian defender, 'Own Goal' is the top scorer at Euro 2024 with eight goals scored so far (via Fox Sports).
Euro 2024 is quickly becoming the tournament of defensive errors and own goals. Across 16 editions of the European Championships, only 20 own goals have been scored, with a whopping 11 of them coming at Euro 2020.
However, this tally of the last Euros doesn't feel safe anymore, as this edition of the European Championships could beat it. We are only at the start of the knockouts and only three own goals away from equalling it. Here's the list of all the own goals scored in Euro 2024 so far.
Belgium apologises for posting insulting Kylian Mbappe video ahead of France vs. Belgium Euro 2024 clash
Two days ago, the social media outlets of the Royal Belgian Football Association posted a video of Amadou Onana vouching to kick France's captain Kylian Mbappe in the Round of 16 clash with Les Bleus. However, the video has since been taken down after outrage from fans.
In the clip, comedian Pablo Andres can be heard singing:
"Who will kick Kylian Mbappe's shin?"
In response, Amadou Onana calls out his name. On Saturday (June 29), Belgian media spokesman Stefan van Loock addressed the video controversy and apologised for the same.
“The video was intended to be humorous but has since been taken offline," commented Van Loock.
