Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Arsenal's pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino. The Spaniard is reportedly tempted by the prospect of playing under Mikel Arteta and is keen on a move to the Emirates.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said:
"Mikel Merino is giving total priority to Arsenal. I told you for days, for weeks, that Mikel Merino is on the list at Arsenal, and he is very high on the list at the moment. There is still no direct contact with Real Sociedad, so there is no concrete negotiation in terms of an official bid - but it could happen soon, because Arsenal are having a very positive exchange on the player's side."
"Merino is tempted by the Premier League, tempted by Arsenal and very tempted by Mikel Arteta, who is considered the perfect coaching for him by people close to the player. Arsenal and Merino remains a concrete topic, but we are still waiting for concrete contacts from club to club."
The 28-year-old's contract with Real Sociedad is set to expire in one year, making him an attractive prospect to sign. He made 45 appearances for the Spanish side last season, scoring eight goals and getting five assists. He was in the Spain squad that won Euro 2024, notably scoring their late winner in the quarter-finals against Germany.
The addition of the Spaniard could provide a different dynamic to the Gunners. With the ability to play in the base of the midfield as well as a more forward role, he could help free up Declan Rice alongside Martin Odegaard to form a potent midfield trio.
Arsenal linked with Bayern Munich forward in blockbuster deal
Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane has emerged as a target for Arsenal. According to Sky Sports Germany, the Gunners are keeping an eye on the German's contract situation, with his deal with the Bavarians set to expire in the summer of 2025.
However, the report claims that his preference is to stay at the club and sign an extension. He made 42 appearances across all competitions last season, bagging 10 goals and 13 assists.
Arteta has worked with Sane previously as the pair worked together at Manchester City. His versatility means he could contribute at either wing positions, competing with the likes of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli on the left while being a solid backup for Bukayo Saka on the right.
