Former Liverpool player turned TV pundit Jamie Carragher has asked the Reds to sign Martin Zubimendi, who had previously declined to come to Anfield. The 25-year-old, who plays for Real Sociedad in the Spanish LaLiga, will provide a significant boost to Liverpool's midfield.
However, the inclusion of Ryan Gravenberch in the thick of things as well as Curtis Jones' good form in midfield may prevent Zubimendi from agreeing to a move. Carragher, nonetheless, believes that if the move is possible, Liverpool should not think twice and blindly go for it.
“If I was Liverpool I would be doing that (strengthening in January). I was thinking about this – if you are Arne Slot and let’s say an average Premier League manager is at a top club for two or three years trying to win the league. Arteta has been there for four or five years. You are trying to build something. He might never be in this position again in terms of being nine points clear of Arsenal and five clear of City," said Carragher on The Overlap’s Stick to Football.
“There’s a long way to go, I get that, but we know Liverpool don’t do silly things in the transfer market but if there is something there right now. Do it. Zubimendi is the player he wanted, they ended up putting Gravenberch there who has been fantastic, but if he is the player you want – go and do it – you might never be in this position. You might be here three years but City are City and they are five points ahead of you at Christmas. Just make it count," he added.
Liverpool had agreed to pay Martin Zubimendi's release clause in the summer
It has been reported in the past that Liverpool had agreed to pay the 51m Pounds release clause of Martin Zubimendi, only for the player to turn the move down. The latter has played thirteen matches for Real Sociedad in La Liga this season, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
Liverpool are perched right at the top of the EPL standings at the moment with 28 points to their name. Their closest competitors Manchester City are second with 23 points, while Chelsea and Arsenal follow with 19 points each. New manager Arne Slot has surprised many with his performances at Liverpool.
