Greece players have honored former Premier League defender George Baldock, who dies this week, with a tribute in their UEFA Nations League clash against England on Thursday, October 10. Baldock, who played for Sheffield United for seven years before joining Greek outfit Panathinaikos FC in the summer, was found dead in his home on Wednesday, October 9.
The full-back died aged 31 and his death has made a major impact on the footballing world, and many have paid their respects. Greece, meanwhile, beat England 2-1 at Wembley.
Benfica forward Vangelis Pavlidis opened the scoring for Greece in the 49th minute. After his goal, Pavlidis pointed to his black armband during his celebration while the Greeks paid tribute to George Baldock by lifting a jersey with his name and number on the back, as seen in the video below.
Jude Bellingham equalized in the 87th minute, scoring with a powerful finish from outside the box. It seemed as though the Three Lions managed to salvage a draw until Pavlidis completed his brace deep into stoppage time (90+4'), securing all three points for Greece.
George Baldock's fiancee pays tribute after former Premier League defender drowns in swimming pool
George Baldock's fiancee, Annabel Dignam, has taken to social media to remember and honor her beloved partner, who tragically died at his home in Greece.
The Panathinaikos player resided with his family at a villa south of Athens. His fiancee discovered him in his swimming pool and informed authorities of the situation. However, they were unable to resuscitate the 31-year-old.
While an official cause of death is yet to be released, reports in Greece suggest that Baldock died by drowning in the water (via GOAL). Annabel paid tribute to her deceased partner in an Instagram post that read (via Sun):
"George, the love of my life, my soulmate. The perfect dad to our beautiful boy. You completed me. You were my world and I know we were yours. You are here with me in Brody's smile, giggle and infectious personality. My world will never be the same but I will find a way for Brody. I promise."
Baldock made 219 appearances for Sheffield United, recording six goals and 16 assists.
