Arsenal legend David Seaman has picked Manchester United's Peter Schmeichel as the Premier League's best goalkeeper ever

Arsenal legend David Seaman has picked former rival and Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel as the best goalkeeper in Premier League history. The Englishman claimed that the Dane brought a new style of shotstopping to the English top flight.

Seaman is widely considered to be one of the greatest goalkeepers of his generation. While he also played for Manchester City, Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers, he is most renowned for his spell with the Gunners.

He had an impressive record of 233 clean sheets in 550 appearances (42.36%) for Arsenal across all competitions. Naturally, he was compared to Schmeichel, who is considered not only one of the best shotstoppers of his generation, but of all time.

Recently, Seaman was asked by Metro to name the greatest EPL goalkeeper of all time. Speaking on behalf of his Betway podcast, the 61-year-old said (via Metro):

"I've got to go for Peter Schmeichel. Look at what he did and what he achieved. The way he kept goal was totally different from me, both styles obviously work, but he brought a new style into the Premier League."

Schmeichel had an outstanding record for Manchester United, with 180 clean sheets in 395 appearances (45.57%). He also played for Aston Villa and Manchester City later in his career, adding another 19 clean sheets in 67 appearances.

He lifted five EPL titles, three FA Cups, a Champions League title, an EFL Cup and multiple supercup titles during his eight-year spell at United. He also helped his nation Denmark win an unprecedented European Championship title in 1992, further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time.

"He has really impressed me" - Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel makes claim about Arsenal shotstopper, names Brazilian star as 'the best' in the EPL

Manchester United icon Peter Schmeichel has claimed that rivals Manchester City's shotstopper Ederson is the best keeper in the Premier League at the moment. The Dane also stated that Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has impressed him, noting that he's getting close to the Brazilian's level.

Initially, Raya joined Arsenal on a loan deal from Brentford in the 2023-24 season. After an impressive debut campaign (20 clean sheets in 41 appearances), the Gunners made his stay permanent for a reported £27 million fee.

While Schmeichel acknowledged the Spaniard's quality, he asserted that Ederson is still the best in the Premier League. On the Stick to Football podcast with Sky Bet, the 61-year-old said (via Metro):

"Ederson is the best keeper in the Premier League. David Raya is coming close now too. He has really impressed me. Once he got established as Arsenal's number one and that competition situation got out of the way and Aaron Ramsdale left, there was a different aura around him."
"He's played well and has kept his team in a few games. He's made some important saves. He has also eradicated all those mistakes that he made from having to be a good footballer," Schmeichel added.

Up next, Raya will be seen in action in Arsenal's clash against Everton in the EPL on December 14.
