Liverpool boss Arne Slot feels star forward Mohamed Salah and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold can improve despite their brilliant performances this season.
Liverpool have made a fantastic start to the new season. The Reds are ranking at the top of the group table in the UEFA Champions League, registering six wins in as many games. They also hold a six-point lead at the top of the table with a game in hand on second-placed Arsenal in the Premier League.
Despite such early success, Slot believes Salah and Alexander-Arnold can improve. Speaking ahead of his team's league fixture against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday (January 5), the Dutch head coach said (via Liverpool Echo):
"There's always room to improve, Mo is 32 and he can still do better but just before I came in, I checked the West Ham game and Mo came off the pitch a bit frustrated at 3-0 up and I think that was cause of chances missed."
He also mentioned the Reds vice-captain, saying:
"Trent can improve but these players are top of the world so not much more they can improve but Trent defensively has made a step up. Outstanding in some games but up and down in some too, so it's about consistency for top players and that is where the biggest improvement can come."
Liverpool are in contention for the Carabao Cup as well where they will play Tottenham Hotspur in the semifinals, with Arsenal taking on Newcastle United in the other last-four tie.
What is the current situation with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold's contract at Liverpool?
Despite Liverpool's flying form, there has been constant rumors about the expiring contracts of their three star players - Salah, Alexander-Arnold and club captain Virgil van Dijk.
Reports about Salah have claimed that he is not yet on agreeable terms with the Reds for a new contract, with the player himself telling Sky Sports (via Al Jazeera):
"We are far away from that (new contract). I don’t want to put something in the media and people start saying stuff, but nothing really has moved on."
As for Alexander-Arnold, the Liverpool right-back could reportedly be set for a move to join Real Madrid (as per The Guardian). There have been no concrete updates about Van Dijk's contract situation, as of January 3, 2025.
