Manchester City star Rodri recently hailed Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos. He shared his thoughts on the German's retirement, saying that he left when he was at his best.

Kroos shocked the football world when he announced his retirement towards the end of the last season. His last Real Madrid match was their 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League final. He then competed with Germany at their home UEFA Euro 2024, where they were unfortunate to be eliminated 2-1 after extra-time by Spain in the quarter-finals.

Kroos was having a stellar 2023-24 season at 34, and hence, his retirement sent shockwaves across the footballing universe as many believed he had a few more years left in him. Rodri, who's been linked with a move to Los Blancos, recently shared his thoughts on the iconic midfielder, saying (via Madrid Xtra):

“Hats off to Toni Kroos. He decided to leave football because he wanted to and when he was at his best, not when football left him. You have to respect the decision.”

Kroos spent a decade at Real Madrid, having arrived from Bayern Munich in 2014. He made 465 appearances for them, scoring 28 goals and providing 99 assists. He won five UEFA Champions League trophies and four LaLiga titles with Los Merengues, among other honors.

Rodri comments on his links to Real Madrid

Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Manchester City star Rodri next summer. With Toni Kroos' retirement, the Spanish giants have struggled for control in midfield this season. Moreover, Aurelien Tchouameni has struggled to provide them with any defensive solidity.

Hence, Los Blancos might consider a move for Rodri next summer. The Spaniard recently shared his thoughts on the rumors, saying (via Madrid Xtra):

"Obviously, when Real Madrid, the best and most successful club in history calls you, it’s an honor. You always have to pay attention.”

Rodri is currently out for the season, having suffered an ACL injury in September. His contract with Manchester City expires in 2027 and as per Transfermarkt, his market value is a whopping €130 million.

Rodri has previously played in Spain, having come through Villarreal's academy and also played for Atletico Madrid. He made 97 appearances in LaLiga and also contributed four goals and five assists. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner could be a good addition to Los Blancos, who are struggling this season. They are second in LaLiga and 18th in the UEFA Champions League table.
