Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has asked boss Arne Slot to consider replacing full-back Andy Robertson. The 2017 Hull arrival has been a mainstay for the Reds over the years but has struggled this season.
Robertson, 30, has made 309 appearances across competitions for the Reds, contributing 11 goals and 65 assists. However, in 12 outings this campaign under new boss Slot, the Scotsman is yet to make a goal contribution and especially struggled against Bukayo Saka in the 2-2 Premier League draw at the weekend.
With the left-back beaten for pace by Saka for the Gunners' opener at the Emirates, Pennant told Instant Casino (via Metro) that Robertson might have reached the end of the road at Anfield:
"Liverpool 100% need to consider a new left-back in January to replace Andy Robertson. I was saying it during the game against Arsenal – Robertson has been an absolutely fantastic servant for the club over the years, but he definitely got found out against Bukayo Saka.
"Yes, you don’t come up against that calibre of opposition every week, but you could see he was having a tough afternoon. He’s not as quick anymore, so I think it’s imperative that Liverpool address it soon."
Pennat isn't convinced about Kostas Tsimkas either, explaining:
"Tsimikas did a better job when he came on, but is he really a long-term, first-choice left-back for Liverpool?’. don’t think so – the club need to look for one in January."
The Reds are a point behind leaders Manchester City (23) after nine games, with both teams winning seven times, while the Cityzens are the only unbeaten side in the division.
What's next for Liverpool?
Liverpool have had a superb start to life under new boss Arne Slot, who replaced the legendary Jurgen Klopp this summer. The Dutchman's side have lost just once in 13 games across competitions, winning 11.
That lone defeat came on matchday four of the Premier League, a surprise 1-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest. The Reds responded with eight wins across competitions before their winning streak was snapped with the aforementioned draw with the Gunners.
Slot's side next take on Brighton & Hove Albion away in the EFL Cup fourth round on Wednesday (October 29), having beaten West Ham United 3-1 at home in their opener last month. The Reds meet the Seagulls again three days later, this time at home in the Premier League.
