Pundit Paul Merson heaped praise on Liverpool star Mohamed Salah after their win over Ipswich Town in their 2024-25 Premier League opener. They beat the newly promoted side 2-0 at Portman Road on Saturday, August 17.
Ipswich put in an excellent performance in the first half and the game remained goalless at halftime. However, the Merseysiders found their groove in the second half and completely dominated the game. Salah assisted the opener in the 60th minute as Diogo Jota scored from close range. The Egyptian then scored himself five minutes later to seal the win.
The assist and goal took Salah's tally to an incredible 300 goal contributions in just 350 games for Liverpool across competitions. After the game, Paul Merson heaped praise on the winger, saying on Sky Sports (via TBR Football):
“You can’t talk highly enough of Salah – how many goals is that now and he plays right wing? He’s a right winger, it is just mind-blowing. He does it every season and he’s the Frank Lampard of Liverpool, but playing right wing!
“Who puts up figures like that playing on the right wing? Not too many, he is a one-off, extraordinary and you can’t replace those players. He turns up every week, he’s fit and he never misses a load of games.”
Frank Lampard was highly consistent during his time at Chelsea. He is their all-time top scorer despite playing in midfield with 211 goals and 148 assists in 648 games.
Mohamed Salah on his PL opening day record after Liverpool's win over Ipswich
Mohamed Salah not only reached the 300-goal contributions milestone with Liverpool on Saturday, but he also broke two Premier League records. He became the player with the most goals (9) and most goal contributions (14) on the opening day of the tournament.
After the game, Salah was asked the reason for his productivity on the opening day and he answered (via Liverpoolfc.com):
"I don’t know! Hopefully I’ll keep going like this through the whole season, not just the first game! I try to help the team all the time. The most important thing is that the team wins the game. I’m always happy to score goals and to give assists so I just need to carry on."
There was speculation about Salah's future at the club with just one year left on his contract and Jurgen Klopp's departure. However, he appears set to stay for at least one more year.
The Reds, meanwhile, will next take on Brentford at Anfield on Sunday, August 25.
