Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville reckons Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was the Player of the Match following the Reds' 2-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The two sides locked horns at the Molineux on Saturday, September 28.
Despite struggling to find their rhythm against Wolves, Arne Slot and Co. secured their fourth win in a row across competitions on Saturday. It came via goals from Ibrahima Konate (45+2') and Mohamed Salah (61' p).
However, Gravenberch looked assured on the ball and was effective in midfield as Liverpool's No.6. The 22-year-old completed 57 out of his 62 passes with an accuracy of 92 percent. He won all three of his attempted tackles, won eight duels, and made six recoveries.
Neville was full of praise as the former Manchester United star said (via Rousing the Kop):
“I think the best player has been Gravenberch. He’s in really good form and he’s been good again. So, he gets it.”
Gravenberch's efforts were a massive factor in Liverpool's ascendance to the top of the league table. They have 15 points from six games and sit one point above Manchester City and Arsenal.
"We conceded a goal that was avoidable, let's put it that way" - Arne Slot gives his verdict following Liverpool's 2-1 win vs Wolves
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has given an honest verdict after being asked if his side's narrow 2-1 win against Wolves was the 'right' result. The Dutchman credited Gary O'Neil for his game plan, admitting the hosts made the game difficult for the Reds.
Slot told Liverpool's official website:
"It’s maybe for others to judge, but I think the first 15 minutes were difficult for us. The other team - Wolves - had a week to prepare and if you have a very good manager like Gary O'Neil, who is tactically really strong and comes up with a strong game plan and that's what he did."
"We were ready for this. You always have to wait to [see] then exactly what he does. He overloaded our right side in a good manner, which made it difficult for us to control the game in the first 15 to 20 minutes. Then when it [the game] lied down a bit the energy it went away maybe and then I think we took more and more control over the game."
He continued:
"For me, it wasn't a surprise the moment we scored a goal because I thought that in those moments we were getting better and better.
"We get a big chance with Dominik Szoboszlai and I was almost surprised that we conceded [in] the second half because I felt in the second half [that] we had much more control than in the first half. We conceded a goal that was avoidable, let's put it that way."
The Reds had more possession of the ball with 55 percent. They also landed 10 shots in total with six being on target, garnering an xG of 2.64 - which was superior to Wolves' eight shots (three on target with an xG of 0.57). However, the stat line didn't paint the entire picture as the hosts were in the game for most of the 90 minutes.
Slot made Liverpool history following the win, becoming the first manager to win his first three away league games. This includes victories against Ipswich Town (2-0) and Manchester United (3-0).
