Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes has backed Andre Onana despite his mistake against Viktoria Plzen that led to a goal. The Red Devils faced the Czech club at the Doosan Arena on Thursday, December 12, in the Europa League.
The game was tied at 0-0 when the Cameroonian attempted to play out from the back early in the second half. His ball to Matthijs de Ligt was intercepted by Pavel Sulc, who cut it back to Matej Vydra to score the opening goal of the game.
However, Rasmus Hojlund ultimately spared Onana's blushes. Coming off the bench in place of Marcus Rashford, the Danish striker scored the equalizer for Manchester United in the 62nd minute. He then latched on to a clever Bruno Fernandes free kick to complete the comeback in the 88th minute.
Speaking after the game, the Red Devils captain insisted that the team trusts Andre Onana's qualities with the ball.
"Andre thought that Matthijs could get the ball and missed the pass, and they scored a goal, but it’s nothing we have to focus about. We have to focus on what's the solution in the future, but it’s not about Andre making a mistake. We don’t look at individuals here when something happens on the wrong side or the good side, for all the players involved," said Bruno Fernandes.
He continued:
"We have huge belief in Andre. He knows he made a mistake, he’s a clever guy. We don’t need to tell him. He’s going to help many times coming out from the back. We trust his qualities on the ball."
He concluded:
"It’s something that we normally do. It’s something that normally works, we did it many times in the first half and they couldn't get near to our players or Andre either. Mistakes will happen."
Manchester United are currently seventh in the Europa League table after six games, with three wins and three draws.
