Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown believes Matthijs de Ligt could become one of the key figures in the Red Devils squad. This comes after the Dutchman has been criticized and has struggled to enhance United's defense.
De Ligt joined Manchester United from Bayern Munich for a reported €45 million in August 2024. Since arriving, the Dutchman has secured a regular spot in the starting XI, starting 18 games across competitions this season.
While speaking to Casino24.dk, Brown lauded De Ligt and urged him to become a key player for United. He said (via GOAL):
"Matthijs de Ligt can be an elite defender for Manchester United, he's had some really good games and when he settles into life at the club he’ll be a big success.
"He’s been playing at the highest level for so many years now at such a young age and now it’s about showing everyone what he can do at Old Trafford. I think he’ll find his rhythm in Ruben Amorim’s system and be a valuable player for many years to come."
De Ligt has registered 22 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions this season. In 16 Premier League appearances, the Dutchman has won 40 ground duels and made 35 clearances.
He was earlier criticized for failing to enhance United's defense before Erik ten Hag was sacked. However, he has featured in seven consecutive games under Ruben Amorim's management and Brown has backed him to deliver in defense.
Manchester United willing to sell Christian Eriksen in January 2025 - Reports
The Red Devils are willing to sell Christian Eriksen in the upcoming January transfer window for a decent offer, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
Eriksen joined Manchester United as a free agent from Brentford in July 2022, and his experience in midfield has been pivotal. The Danish midfielder is creative with the ball and his ability to deliver set-pieces has been outstanding.
His contract as a Red Devils midfielder is set to expire next summer. United are reportedly unwilling to extend his contract and could sell him in the upcoming winter transfer window if a suitable offer is tabled.
This season, Eriksen has scored four goals and registered three assists in 14 games across competitions. However, he has struggled to secure regular game time under the new head coach. In seven games under Amorim's management, Eriksen has only featured once. This could imply that he's not part of Amorim's long-term plans as United have reportedly opted to sell him.
