Former player Jason Cundy has expressed his wish to see Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher play for Chelsea. He believes the Irishman is 'too good to be a #2' at the club and should move.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Cundy urged his former club to sign the 25-year-old goalkeeper who has impressed him. He believes that the Irishman does well every time he is asked to replace Alisson in goal.
Cundy said:
"What was really evident to me at the weekend was that Chelsea's No. 1 isn't as good as Liverpool's No. 2. Whenever I see Kelleher play, he looks top drawer. Sometimes when you see a No. 2 goalkeeper come in, you might see the defense drop a bit deeper or they're hesitant to do back passes. Whenever Kelleher's in goal and he's played a lot in the last 18 months to two years both in the Carabao Cup and Champions League, he never looks out of place."
"Liverpool don't look any weaker with him in goal and that is a massive compliment by the way. If you're a Liverpool fan, I know you've got [Giorgi] Mamardashvili coming in, but you don't want Kelleher to go either. He's too good to be a No. 2. I want him [at Chelsea]," he added.
Caoimhin Kelleher played a key role (nine saves) in helping the Reds beat Chelsea 1-0 in the Carabao Cup final last season. He also did well in the 2-1 win over the Blues in this season's Premier League clash at Anfield.
Caoimhin Kelleher interested in leaving Liverpool
Caoimhin Kelleher spoke to The Telegraph earlier this month and said he was thinking about leaving Liverpool in the summer. He wants to play regularly and believes it is ideal for him to leave Anfield since Alisson is likely to remain the club's first choice in goal.
He said:
"I was quite clear [last summer] that I wanted to play first-team football, whether that was here or elsewhere. I wanted to be a No 1. That was my thought process – but it's always been my thought process because obviously I am a football player and, like every player, I want to play."
"I'm not going to enjoy myself or be happy sitting on the bench. When I was coming through the academy to work my way up, obviously when you first get into the No. 2 position you're happy and it's progress," he added.
The Reds have also signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia but he has been loaned back for the season. The Georgian goalkeeper is expected to take over from Alisson soon, but reports suggest he could be loaned out in the Premier League next season.
