Mark Ogden has spoken about Rodri's chance of winning the 2024 Ballon d'Or award for his performances for Manchester City and Spain last season. The defensive midfielder was a vital cog in the teams that won the English Premier League and Euro 2024.
Rodri made 50 club appearances in the previous campaign, scoring nine times and providing 14 assists before making six appearances at the European Championships for La Roja.
Speaking about the Spaniard's chance of claiming the Ballon d'Or on the ESPN YouTube channel, Ogden said:
“I would go for Rodri. I don’t think he’ll get it, he’s not fashionable enough. He’s the best in the world in what he does. I’m not a massive fan of these individual awards, it was the Ronaldo-Messi show for a long time. I would go Rodri all day long, but I don’t think he’ll win it.”
Rodri will face stiff competition from the Real Madrid trio Vinicus Jr., Jude Bellingham, and Dani Carvajal for the Ballon d'Or in October. The midfielder will be keen to beat the competition and become the second Spanish-born man to claim the award since Luis Suarez in 1960.
Previous Ballon d'Or winner tips Vinicius jr to claim award in October
Rivaldo, the 1999 Ballon d'Or winner, has tipped Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr to win the prestigious award in October. The Brazilian was in scintillating form for Los Blancos last season, helping them to the domestic and European double at the end of the campaign.
Speaking to ESPN Brasil about his compatriot's chances before Copa America earlier in the summer, Rivaldo said:
"He's a very dedicated boy. He arrived at Real Madrid and went to Real Madrid B to learn. He played a few games and we could see that he still needed a bit of time to learn how to score. And he learnt! He trained hard and dedicated himself. Today, you can see that he has a much easier time scoring."
Vinicius bagged 24 goals and 11 assists in 39 appearances last season for Real Madrid. He has continued his purple patch this season with one goal and three assists in five games.
