Gabriel Martinelli has hailed Bukayo Saka after Arsenal's win over Brentford on New Year's Day. He insists that the England international is irreplaceable for the Gunners.

Mikel Arteta's side were dealt a blow to their title charge this season after Saka picked up a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace in December. He has undergone surgery and could potentially be out until March.

However, the north Londoners have maintained form in his absence, securing wins over Ipswich Town and Brentford. Arsenal had a rough start to their fixture against the Bees, with Bryan Mbeumo gaining the lead in the 13th minute.

The Gunners leveled things before the break as Gabriel Jesus equalized just before the half-hour mark. Quick-fire goals from Mikel Merino (50') and Gabriel Martinelli (53') in the second period sealed a 3-1 victory for the north Londoners.

Ethan Nwaneri started on the left wing in Saka's stead and the 17-year-old attacker's cross led to Martinelli's goal. In an interview with TNT Sports after the game, Martinelli was asked whether Arsenal's attacking players felt more pressure to perform in Saka's absence.

The Brazilian said (via Metro):

"No-one can replace him, he’s one of the best players in the world. But we know the team we have, we trust ourselves and we will try our best. I’m sure he is happy with the result."

The Gunners will next face Brighton & Hove Albion away on Saturday (January 4).

"I’m not happy with Martinelli" - Pundit insists Arsenal star must 'step up' in Bukayo Saka's absence

Emmanuel Petit has criticized Gabriel Martinelli's performances for the Gunners with Saka on the sidelines. The pundit insists that Arsenal are too reliant on Saka and his teammates should deliver without him.

The former Chelsea midfielder said:

"Saka being out for a few weeks is a huge blow – but other players now need to come in, step up, and take on the responsibility."

Petit then called out Martinelli in particular. While admitting he had a great game against Crystal Palace in their 5-1 victory in December, where he scored, Petit insists it does not suffice.

He added:

"I’m thinking about Gabriel Martinelli, for example. I’m not happy with Martinelli. He had a good game against Crystal Palace a few days ago, but that’s not enough."
“The transfer market is opening soon, and I know that it’s hard to spot good opportunities at this time of the year, but they need to strengthen the team."

Martinelli has made 25 appearances across all competitions for Arsenal this season, scoring six goals and providing two assists.
