Jamie Carragher praised Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister during the Reds' clash with Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday (January 5). The game ended in a 2-2 draw for the teams to share points.
Liverpool hosted Ruben Amorim's side at Anfield over the weekend in the league, a fixture many expected the Reds to win, given their form.
The Merseysiders scored 14 goals in their last three games in December, and lead the league table. Meanwhile, United were goalless in three consecutive defeats at the end of the year.
However, Liverpool struggled to secure all three points and settled for a 2-2 draw with the Red Devils on Sunday. Lisandro Martinez (52') opened the scoring in the second period before Cody Gakpo's equalizer (59') and Mohamed Salah's penalty (70') helped the Reds take the lead.
10 minutes after Salah's strike, Amad Diallo leveled the scoreline and Manchester United came away with a point from their trip to Anfield. Neither side could find the back of the net in the first period and Carragher hailed Mac Allister for helping the Merseysiders shift gears.
Speaking about the Argentine on Sky Sports commentary of the game, the Reds icon said (via Rousing the Kop):
“Liverpool have improved in the last five minutes and a lot of that is down to that man. A couple of lovely passes, great run there to get on the end of that beautiful Mo Salah pass. He’s been fantastic, Mac Allister, so far in the game. Liverpool haven’t got going in the opening ten minutes but he’s the one who’s got them going.”
Mac Allister has made 26 appearances across all competitions for the Reds so far this season, contributing three goals and assists each.
“The result is not good enough" - Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister reflects on Manchester United draw
Alexis Mac Allister said his side weren't good enough against Manchester United on Sunday. The Argentine believes the result was an accurate representation of their performance.
Mac Allister, who set up Cody Gakpo's goal in the second half, told reporters after the game (via One Football):
“The result is not good enough. The performance was not as good as we wanted but at the end of the day, it was a fair result. We didn’t play as we wanted and conceded too many chances and had opportunities to score more goals."
The former Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder added:
“The effort was there, the mentality was there because we came back; but when you’re 2-1 at 75 minutes, you have to defend better and we couldn’t do it, so we have to think about what we did wrong and move on.”
Liverpool remain at the top of the league table after their draw against United. The Reds have a considerable lead of six points over second-placed Arsenal with a game in hand as well.
They will next face Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup semi-finals on Wednesday (January 8).
