Dutch forward Cody Gakpo overlooked Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah and named forward Darwin Nunez 'the fastest' player at Liverpool. The 25-year-old also named Andy Robertson as one of the quicker players, but ended up picking the Uruguayan instead.
After a brilliant campaign for Netherlands at the 2022 FIFA World Cup (three goals in five appearances) Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 for a reported £37 million fee. He made 53 appearances in his first full season at Anfield (2023-24), bagging 16 goals and six assists.
This season, he has been rotated in and out of the starting lineup alongside Nunez. However, with first-choice forward Diogo Jota picking up a rib injury, both players are likely to have a bigger role over the next month.
Gakpo is seemingly very impressed with his Uruguayan teammate, which was showcased by his words in a video from Pro: Direct Soccer. In the clip (at 3:11 in the video below), when asked who is the fastest at Liverpool, he wrote Nunez's name on his whiteboard.
YouTuber Angry Ginge, who was also in the video, wrote the names of Salah and Robertson. When asked to compare the three on the basis of their pace, Gakpo said: (via Rousing The Kop):
"He's (Robertson) quick but not, like, the fastest, you know what I mean? (Salah's) fast, (but) Darwin Nunez (is) one of, or the fastest in the team, yeah."
Gakpo, Nunez, Salah and Robertson will likely be seen in action when Liverpool take on Brighton in the Round of 16 of the EFL Cup on October 30.
"That says a lot about him" - Liverpool manager Arne Slot praises Darwin Nunez's intensity, calls for 'improvement'
Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised forward Darwin Nunez's intensity, but claimed that he still has a lot of 'room for improvement'.
Although the Uruguayan has made only five starts this season (10 appearances), he has looked lively and threatening whenever he has been on the pitch. He has bagged two goals and two assists so far, with Slot claiming that he is 'pleased' by the 25-year-old star.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the Reds' clash with Brighton in the EFL Cup, the Dutch tactician said (via Mirror):
"I think about Darwin, I gave him credit for the fact he worked so hard in previous weeks when he didn't play a lot to be able to play three games in a row. I think three games in eight days, so that says a lot about him. He scored a goal, which was vital, but his work-rate was also really good and he’s not played that many games with us."
Alongside all the praise, Slot also sent out a challenge to Nunez, claiming that there is still a long way to go until he reaches his best form. He added:
"So with him there is, like the others, room for improvement in co-operation with some of the other players, but that's normal. He's very good and it's pleasing to see that after a difficult start."
Slot's tenure at Liverpool has got off to a rollicking start, with 11 wins, one draw and just one loss in his first 13 games in charge.
