Scott Boggins, the executive producer of the Apple TV+ series Messi Meets America, revealed that Lionel Messi was eager to be a part of the project.
Messi made global headlines when he decided to leave Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) as a free agent to join MLS club Inter Miami on July 15. The six-part documentary follows the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner's transition from European football to playing in the United States.
The TV series debuted on Apple TV+ on October 11, with the first three episodes currently available to watch. It offers viewers a unique behind-the-scenes view of one of the greatest footballers to grace the game and has a decent rating of 7.8 on IMDb.
Boggins gave his verdict on the series (via Awful Announcing):
“(We’re) able to tell a transformative moment for soccer in America in a real-time documentary series that is being presented to viewers in the moment while the moment is still happening. That is a wonderful opportunity as a storyteller to really dig in.”
He added:
“We’re still with them. We’re going all the way to the end of the season. We have really priceless moments of a season that has had its ups and downs, like any season. But this particular team adds the greatest of all time. He has come to Miami to celebrate his passion for the game.”
“As a documentary unit, we weren’t starting at the beginning of the year. We were starting about halfway through a massive change. So, we need to go very slow."
“Everyone was super cooperative,” he said. “Lionel Messi was incredibly generous with his time. He was all in. He wanted to be a part of this project.”
Further episodes of Messi Meets America are currently in production and are set to premiere later this season.

Lionel Messi came off the bench in the second half as Argentina defeated Paraguay 1-0 in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier clash at the Estadio Mas Monumental last night (October 12).
Nicholas Otamendi's goal in the third minute was enough to seal all three points for the Albiceleste. They are at the summit of the CONMEBOL standings with nine points, having played three games to date.
Lionel Messi was named on the bench after recently recovering from an injury. He was subbed on in the 53rd minute for Julian Alvarez. He looked quite rusty, having a pass accuracy of 74%. Moreover, none of his three shots were on target. He was dispossessed twice and registered zero accurate crosses.
