Bayer Leverkusen elicited responses of shock from football fans as they scored a stoppage-time leveler to extend their incredible unbeaten run on Saturday, April 27. The German outfit have now gone 46 matches without defeat across competitions since the start of the season, an incredible record in world football.
Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen have come to be known as Bayer Neverlusen this season as they have yet to taste defeat this season. Die Werkself confirmed their status as the German champions for the first time ever earlier this month, dethroning Bayern Munich.
Alonso's side have become masters of the late goal, having scored a number of late goals throughout the season to keep them from losing their unbeaten run. Their most recent opponents were Stuttgart, a side that have run them close twice this season, drawing in the league and losing narrowly in the DFB Pokal.
Sitting in third place in the Bundesliga, Stuttgart went two goals ahead of the champions-in-waiting early in the second half on Saturday. Bayer Leverkusen rallied and pulled one back before their late equaliser sent X into a frenzy.
Fans were in disbelief, and they made this known with their posts on the platform, praising the never-say-die attitude of the side.
They wrote:
"How do they keep doing this!"
"Madness 🤯"
"They had to get it right and they did 😭"
"Unbelievable team!!"
"That's unbelievable 😳👏🏼"
"Now they will finish the league unbeaten. Stuttgart was the toughest opponent"
"Leverkusen classic one more time"
Bayer Leverkusen remain in the hunt for two more trophies this season. They are through to the DFB Pokal final, where they will face FCK Kaiserslautern. They are also set to face AS Roma in the semifinals of the UEFA Europa League. They have recorded 25 wins and six draws in the league this season and look set to end the league campaign without defeat.
Bayer Leverkusen hold Stuttgart in remarkable match
For the second week running and the umpteenth time this season, Bayer Leverkusen left it very late to deny their opponents a first win over them. They came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Stuttgart at home on Saturday.
Third-placed Stuttgart took the lead just two minutes into the second half through Chris Fuhrich before Deniz Undav (56') doubled their lead. Amine Adli pulled one back for Alonso's side in the 61st minute, who then had a goal disallowed for offside.
With the game looking set to end in a defeat for Die Werkself, Robert Andrich conjured a late equaliser. He lashed home a loose ball from inside the box in the 97th minute.
Xabi Alonso's side will face AS Roma away in their next game as the semi-final stage of the UEFA Europa League commences on May 2.
