Argentina legend Lionel Messi is all set to participate in his seventh Copa America as the 2024 edition kicks off on Thursday, June 20, with the holders taking on debutants Canada. It's also his first as the reigning champion, with the Barcelona legend guiding the Albiceleste to their 15th title in the competition in 2021, ending a 28-year title drought.
Since making his Copa debut in 2007, Messi has broken a few records along the way. Those include making the joint-most appearances (34) and providing the most assists in a single edition (5 in 2021).
At the continental competition this year, the 36-year-old could break a few more. For example, Messi has 13 goals in Copa America, which is only four shy of the record held by Norberto Mendez (Argentina) and Zizinho (Brazil).
It seems like a doable job for the Argentine ace, despite his advanced age. Indeed, Messi netted twice against Guatemala in their last friendly before the tournament to build some momentum. Meanwhile, he scored 14 times in 15 games across competitions for Inter Miami this season before joining the national team.
However, Messi will face some competition in the race to become Copa America's all-time leading scorer. Among the active players, Peru's evergreen striker Paulo Guerrero and Chilean hero Eduardo Vargas are ahead of Messi with 14 goals each. Either player or both could break the record before the Argentine great unless he hits the ground running.
Lionel Messi is also on the cusp of surpassing Ali Daei
Since we are on the subject of goals, Lionel Messi could reach another milestone during the tournament. With 108 goals, he is tied for second spot with Iranian legend Ali Daei on the all-time list of international goalscorers.
Should he score on Thursday, the Inter Miami star will become the second-highest scorer by himself, and just the second player to surpass Daei's tally, one that stood unmatched for years.
Messi's arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo was the first to break it when he achieved the feat in June 2021. The Portugal ace, who is currently representing his nation at Euro 2024, is the most prolific goalscorer in international football with 130 goals.
