Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has hit out at Reds star Mohamed Salah over his comments on his contract. The Sky Sports pundit believes the Egyptian was selfish to talk about the situation publically and it does not help the club.
Salah scored twice as Liverpool beat Southampton 3-2 on Sunday, November 24, to go eight points clear at the top of the Premier League. The forward has one year left on his Liverpool contract and publicly claimed after the game that he is yet to receive a new offer.
Carragher told Sky Sports that Liverpool will play Real Madrid and Manchester City in the coming days so the contract talk was unnecessary. He added that is not the most important thing for the club right now.
"Of course, there's been discussions. Right now, there's obviously a big difference in valuation, how Salah and his agent value themselves, in terms of length of contract, and how Liverpool do. So the reason Liverpool wouldn't have offered a contract yet is because Mo Salah will turn it down," he said via Goal.
"They're still in talks, I'm desperate for them to meet in the middle. But I must say, I am very disappointed with Mo Salah. That interview last night... Liverpool have Real Madrid in midweek and Manchester City next weekend. That's the story for Liverpool right now. And Mo Salah, we're aware - certainly the local reporters near the club - that in seven years he's stopped in the mixed zone twice. That's absolutely fine. But he stops for the third time away at Southampton on the back of winning Liverpool the game and putting that out," Carragher added.
He concluded:
"Now the most important thing for L'pool this season is not the future of Mo Salah, it's not the future of Virgil van Dijk and it's not the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The most important thing is L'pool winning the Premier League. That is more important than any of those players, and if he continues to put comments out or his agent keeps putting cryptic tweets out, that's selfish, that's thinking about themselves and not the football club."
Liverpool are in fine form despite contract issues
Liverpool are on top of the Premier League despite a change of guard and contract issues. Arne Slot's men are eight points clear of second-placed Manchester City after 12 matches.
The Reds are also atop the UEFA Champions League standings and are the only side to boast a 100% record in the new format. They will next face defending champions Real Madrid on Wednesday, November 27.
Liverpool will then face Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday, November 1.
