Wesley Fofana has acknowledged that he was thinking about leaving Chelsea this summer. The defender claimed that a conversation with new manager Enzo Maresca changed his mind as the Italian wanted him as a key part of the project.

Fofana shared that he was unsure if Chelsea would see him as a key player this season as he was returning from an injury. He added that Marseille wanted to sign him and told Telefoot:

“I had a call that really touched me, and it would be a lie to say that I didn’t calculate it. It was Medhi Benatia, sporting director of OM, and it touched me. Everyone knows why… I had a thought, but the goal, at the moment, is to succeed at Chelsea. We had a call from Mr. Benatia. It’s sure that it went “boom, boom” in my heart."
"Because I was coming back from injury, and I didn’t know if I was going to be part of the club’s project. But I had a discussion with the coach [Maresca], and he told me that he was counting on me this season. So, I said I was very happy, I was 100% with Chelsea. But after that, it’s sure that there is OM in a part of my heart, we’ll see…” he continued.

Wesley Fofana spoke to Free Foot earlier this season and claimed he was ready to join Marseille. However, he wants to be a club legend at Stamford Bridge and is focused on his contract until 2029.

Wesley Fofana comments on Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca

In a discussion with Free Foot earlier this season, Wesley Fofana said he was delighted to work with Enzo Maresca. He claimed that the new Chelsea manager has made the players work with more energy and he is happy with the start.

"We are creating good things. Every game is better. We have more energy, more quality with the ball. When we press, we create good things. Now we need to win games. I enjoy every minute after a long period without football. I'm very happy. Now we cut a little bit [for the international break], and we come back after to play games and win games," Fofana said.

Enzo Maresca's side will face Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, November 3.
