Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has revealed the message that former Red boss Jurgen Klopp sent him after his side's comeback win over Leicester City. The German tactician spent nine years with the Merseyside club before leaving in the summer to take a break from management.
Jones, who debuted under Klopp and played 132 games under the German, revealed he got a message from his former manager after the Boxing Day fixture. Speaking with The Metro after the game, the English midfielder revealed his former boss congratulated him on playing his 100th Premier League game, saying:
"It was Jurgen, I just came in then and we had a talk as a team, I went on my phone, we normally text family and stuff and I saw a text off Klopp and he said, ‘congrats on 100 games and here’s to 500."
"I was like, ‘what’s he on about?’. 100, I’m on more than that for appearances, so I just checked my Instagram and it was 100 Prem [games]. Proud, absolutely proud yeah. That’s what he’s like, he’s still in touch with the whole team. He’s a great man, he’s still loved off us, it was him who set up the team that we’ve got, the foundation was there already and Slot has just carried it on."
Liverpool currently sits in first place on the Premier League table with 42 points from 17 games, seven points clear of second-placed Chelsea while having a game in hand. They next face West Ham United in their final game of the year.
"It is far too early to be celebrating. You have seen all these games and I don’t think there was an easy win." Liverpool manager urges focus after Leicester City win
Liverpool manager Arne SLot has urged his side to focus after they secured a comeback win over Leicester City on Boxing Day. The 20-time English Champions look set to claim a 21st League title and sit ahead of the chasing pack at the top of the league standings.
Slot is enjoying a dominant start to life in charge of Liverpool, averaging 2.65 points per game after 26 games in charge of the Anfield-based side. Despite his impressive start to life at the club, the Dutch manager remains focused on the next game, saying via The Guardian :
“If you are in this game for a long time, like these players are and I am, you know that you don’t look at it 20 games before the end. There are so many challenges still ahead of you. A few months ago we were one point behind Manchester City and look at what has happened there. Injuries, suspensions, bad luck – it can happen to anybody."
"It is far too early to be celebrating. You have seen all these games and I don’t think there was an easy win. That tells you how difficult it is to win if all of your players are available. We just have to take it one game at a time.”
Liverpool is currently on top of every league competition they compete in and will be keen to wrap up their title charges at the end of the business campaign next year.
