David Beckham once included Argentine maestro Lionel Messi and three other players in his roster of the four greatest footballers of the generation. The 49-year-old Englishman was one of the best midfielders to play the game in his prime, representing European giants like Real Madrid, Manchester United, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), and LA Galaxy.
After he retired from professional football, Beckham focused on the business aspect of the game and became the co-owner of the MLS side Inter Miami along with Jorge Mas and Jose Mas. The Fort Lauderdale-based club did the unthinkable in 2023 when they signed La Pulga on a Bosman move from Paris Saint-Germain.
During a 2023 visit to Mexico City, the Englishman was asked to name the four greatest players of all time. The former midfield superstar's choices spanned generations, picking Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pele, and Diego Maradona.
He said (via Bolavip):
"I’m not sure if Messi is the greatest of all time. Obviously, when you look back at the greats over the years, from Pele to Maradona, and of course, Cristiano and Messi, it’s hard to pick one. But what Leo has achieved is remarkable. To cap off his brilliant career with a World Cup win… well, his career isn’t over yet; it will continue for a few more years. He’s definitely one of the greatest players of all time.”
"I love Leo for so many reasons" - When David Beckham waxed lyrical about Lionel Messi
During the aforementioned interview, David Beckham lavished praise on the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner. In addition to his footballing prowess, the Englishman spoke highly of the Argentine's personality on and off the field.
Beckham said:
“I love Leo for so many reasons. I love him because he’s a great father, because he has a wonderful personality, great character, and is a genuinely good person. But I think what everyone loves about him is the way he plays soccer—with passion, with freedom. The way he played in the last World Cup, leading his country to that title, was an incredible moment for him. I love watching players like him.”
David Beckham has shared the pitch with Lionel Messi only four times during his playing days. Both have won once each with the remaining two ending in stalemates.
In just 39 games for Inter Miami, Messi has become the club's highest goalscorer in history with 34. Additionally, he has recorded 18 assists for The Herons. This season, he also won the MLS Supporters' Shield with Inter Miami with a record 74 points.
