Real Madrid fans online were left unhappy with Ferland Mendy and Lucas Vazquez starting against Mallorca in the Supercopa de Espana semi-final on Thursday, January 9. The fullback duo has been regulars in the starting XI this season owing to some significant injuries.

Carlo Ancelotti named Thibaut Courtois as his goalkeeper, with Ferland Mendy, Antonio Rudiger, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Lucas Vazquez forming the backline. Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde feature in the midfield. Vinicius Jr., Kylian Mbappe and Rodrygo form the attacking line-up.

Fans took to X to react to the line-up, with a major section being critical of Mendy and Vazquez as the starting fullback duo. One Madridista wrote:

"This lineup deserves to lose so we can get Carlo the hell out of there. Mendy should stop playing, Vazquez okay bc we don't really have another option. just play with 3 defenders Rüdiger & Ascensio and Vazquez and put Arda in too."
"I’m tired of this Mendy and Vazquez ball 😭 anytime the ball is at their side there’s no assurance," another user agreed.
"we've the worst fullback pairs itw, tired of watching Mendy, Vazquez stinking week in week out," a netizen added.
"Mendy And Lucas again, man f*ck Ancelotti,he will let them play against barca as well, another 4-0 is on the way," another X user commented.

Fans continued to complain about the decision:

"Mendy and Vazquez both starting tonight," a fan wrote.
"scary hours, mendy and vazquez as our fullbacks," a user chimed in.
"We still employ MENDY AND VAZQUEZ how is this even allowed," another Madridista remarked.

If Real Madrid beat Mallorca tonight to qualify for the Supercopa de Espana final, they will face Barcelona for the third time in a row. The Catalans beat Athletic Club 2-0 to qualify for the final on January 8.

In the last season (2023-24), Real Madrid beat Barcelona 4-1 in the final, with Vinicius Jr. scoring a hat-trick. Rodrygo sealed the deal with Los Blancos' fourth goal of the night. However, in the 2022-23 season, the Catalans won 3-1 against their archrivals, with Gavi, Robert Lewandowski and Pedri finding the net.

Real Madrid have already faced their first El Clasico defeat in LaLiga, with Barcelona demolishing them 4-0 in October. Ancelotti's side will be desperate to retain their Supercopa title this time alongside exacting their revenge.

Meanwhile, Barcelona could be a formidable force as they will be eyeing their first trophy of the season. It will also mark their first title under new coach Hansi Flick after a disappointing and trophyless 2023-24 season.
