Real Madrid forward Rodrygo has shed light on his social media posts where he seemingly questioned the 2024 Ballon d'Or shortlist. The Brazilian was excluded from the 30-man shortlist for the prestigious award despite being a vital part of the Los Blancos team that claimed La Liga and the UEFA Champions League last season.
Rodrygo made 51 club appearances in the previous campaign, scoring 17 times and providing nine assists.
Speaking about his exclusion from the 30-man shortlist, Rodrygo told ESPN Brazil:
"I made a somewhat mocking post (after the Ballon d'Or nominees announcement). There's not much to say now. Everyone knows my indignation. Everyone has supported me, both in the national team and in Real Madrid. People sent me messages."
The Brazillian concluded, saying:
"I was upset. I think I deserved it. I don't want to belittle the players who are there, but I think I had a place in the top 30. It was a surprise."
The forward has begun the current campaign for Real Madrid in decent form, bagging one goal and one assist in five games so far this campaign.
Real Madrid legend tips Vinicius Jr to win Ballon d'Or
Back in July, Real Madrid legend Karim Benzema tipped Vinicius Jr to claim the Ballon d'Or award in October. The Brazilian forward was an integral part of the Los Blancos team, helping the Spanish giants to La Liga and UEFA Champions League glory last season.
Speaking to MARCA, the Frenchman tipped his former teammate to claim the award, saying (via Goal):
"I'm going to say Vini because he deserves it for his season and not just for what he's done this year, but also for what he's done last year, he was also above the rest with his football and what he does with the ball. He's a kid, a complete footballer.
"He can win a game on his own, of course with the help of his teammates, but he is very good when Real Madrid needs him and that is why I think he deserves it. He is always there and he always shows up. For all of that, my favourite is Vini."
Vinicus Jr will go up against his Los Blancos teammates Jude Bellingham and Dani Carvajal for the Ballon d'Or award in October. The Brazilian will hope his 24 goals and 11 assists in 39 games will be enough to secure the prize and make him the first player from his country since Kaka to win the prize.
