Michael Owen has named Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez as the player he would have signed if he was the Liverpool manager. He believes that the Argentine star is a top-class player and would dominate the midfield.
Speaking to ESPN Argentina, Owen claimed that he was not surprised to see Moises Caicedo and Fernandez link up well in the midfield. He is surprised that it took them this long to get on the same page.
The former Liverpool star said:
"I like Enzo Fernández, yeah. I think he's brilliant, I really like him. When they signed him and Caicedo, I thought oh that could be the best partnership in the Premier League. It took a long time to gel but now they're starting to look good but I think Enzo Fernández is top class. If I was the Liverpool manager and I had to put an Argentinean in there now, I think I would probably play him in midfield, yeah."
Liverpool were interested in Enzo Fernandez but Chelsea beat competition by activating his release clause at Benfica, just a month after the FIFA World Cup. However, they ended up agreeing on a fee slightly over the clause at the end as they looked to pay in installments.
Liverpool urged to sign midfielder compared to Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez
Former Benfica coach Joao Tralhao spoke to GOAL earlier this year and claimed that Liverpool should sign Florentino Luis. He believes that the midfielder is similar to Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez.
He said:
"He is the kind of player every coach would like to have in their squad. He’s an amazing boy, a hard worker, calm, professional, always prepared to listen and he is a proper team player. He doesn't think only of himself. Technically speaking, it’s not easy to find a midfielder with the defensive qualities he has. I used to joke with him and say that he saw the game two seconds before everyone else."
"It’s amazing the amount of interceptions he makes, the way he can be in the right position all the time. He is always in the right space to regain the ball and he has improved so much in terms of duels, using his body, protecting the ball in contact and so on," he added.
Tralhao also compared Luis to Chelsea legend Claude Makelele and Manchester United's Casemiro. He has boldly stated that the midfielder would be one of the best defensive midfielders soon.
