Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp has questioned Bruno Fernandes' red card during Manchester United's 3-0 loss to Spurs in the Premier League yesterday (September 29). The Englishman reckoned that a booking would've been enough for the player's offense.

Tottenham's visit to Old Trafford ended up being a tough one for Manchester United. A slow start from the Red Devils allowed the visitors to draw first blood as early the third minute via a Brennan Johnson strike.

To make matters worse, Bruno Fernandes was caught in a mess in the 42nd minute as he was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on James Maddison. That killed any hopes the Red Devils had of staging a fight back and consequently cost them the three points.

Jamie Redknapp aired his opinion about the incident. He reckoned that the referee's decision to issue a straight red card for the foul was just too much and a yellow card would've sufficed.

"He slips as he comes in to try and win the challenge," the former Spurs star said on Sky Sports. "You can see that his feet go under him. It's petty and it's a bit petulant. That angle is quite damning... his feet go under him. I think it's a yellow card."

The game took a different course shortly after the incident as Manchester United played catch-up to Tottenham in the second 45 minutes. Spurs went on to double their lead shortly after the restart through Dejan Kulusevski (47') before Dominic Solanke piled more misery on the hosts with his 77th-minute strike which condemned the Red Devils to a 3-0 loss.

What is next for Manchester United and Tottenham?

Following Sunday's setback in the Premier League, Manchester United will now switch their focus to the Europa League this week where they will go head-to-head with Portuguese outfit FC Porto away from home on Thursday (October 3).

They will then return to action in the English top flight with a tough game against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday (October 6). Erik ten Hag's men will need to bounce back as soon as possible as they currently linger in the bottom half of the table.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur are scheduled to face Ferencvaros in their next Europa League outing this Thursday before squaring off with Brighton in Premier League action on Sunday.
