Marc Cucurella has invited Lamine Yamal to join him in the celebrations following Spain's Euro 2024 win, but with his father's permission. The statement came in a hilarious interview after La Roja won the tournament's final against England.
Cucurella and Yamal were key to Spain's run to a fourth European championship, with the Chelsea defender making six appearances and providing one assist. The Blaugrana, who turned 17 a day before the final, was one of the best players in the tournament, scoring once and assisting four times in seven appearances.
When asked to give a message to the fans during a post-match interview, Cucurella said (translated from Spanish) (via voetbalzonenl):
“Enjoy, but be careful. Hopefully in nine months the birth rate will have increased because I have seen that it is low in Spain.
"And Lamine Yamal? Will he enjoy it too? I don't know if he has an exam tomorrow, but hey, if his father gives permission, we'll let him join the party.”
Marc Cucurella and Lamine Yamal helped Spain to their first Euro title in 12 years. It remains unclear if the 17-year-old's father let him party with his older teammate, but after La Roja's dominant showing, there could be many more celebratory parties in Yamal's future.
Quotes from Lamine Yamal's father and Marc Cucurella statement's after Euro 2024 win
Lamine Yamal's father and Marc Cucurella's statements have come into the limelight in the aftermath of Spain's Euro 2024 win. Yamal and Cucurella provided the assists in the final in Berlin to see La Roja claim a fourth Euro win.
Cucurella was heavily criticized ahead of the tournament by English pundit, Gary Neville, who said (via GetFootballNewsSpain):
“I think he is one of the reasons I think Spain probably can’t go all the way.”
Following the win, the former Brighton star, responded, posting on his Instagram story (via Metro):
“We went all the way, Gary. Thanks for your support.”
The Chelsea defender further said after Spain's final win (via Metro):
"Nobody gave us a chance, We just kept quiet and, in the end, we won the Euros. We showed that we know how to play, but also how to suffer. We suffered like a family. When we arrived, we were a group of players. Now, we are a family. This is incredible, and it's already history."
Lamine Yamal's father on the other hand waxed poetic about his son who proved himself as one of the best players in the tournament. He told Forbes before the final:
"I knew about my son when he was born, I knew he was going to be a star. Whoever is a father knows it and any father wants his child to be the best.
"Not only in football, but also in the love [he gives] and as a person. He is a child and he has a blessing from God, which is very important and must be valued."
The Spanish duo will continue their celebrations and will look forward to the Finalissima where they will play Argentina.
