Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has raved about Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak following the Magpies' 2-0 win against Manchester United on Monday, December 30. The Swede opened the scoring for Eddie Howe's side as they secured all three points at Old Trafford.
Isak has been recently linked with a switch to Liverpool and it has been claimed that Newcastle United would demand a £150 million fee for their talisman. The Tyneside giants secured his signature in a club-record fee of £63 million from Real Sociedad in 2022.
Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on the 25-year-old and insisted that he wouldn't think twice before splashing £150 million for Isak. The former England defender hailed the Sweden international for his composure in front of goal.
Carragher said on Sky Sports, as quoted by The Liverpool Echo:
"Alexander, I absolutely adore you. I think you're a fantastic player and if I had £150m, I'd pay it to have you at any club. He's [Isak] not just a goalscorer, you're seeing some of his touches and I can never forget the first time I saw him play live."
"It was a couple of years ago, maybe two or three years ago at Anfield, very early on in the season, he scored a goal, he ran through, and the thing about him is, when he's got a chance to score or he's got to finish, he's one of those strikers you never expect him to miss, he's always got that coolness in front of goal," Carragher added.
Carragher went on to state that Isak is a complete striker and can even play as a number ten if needed. He has also claimed that the 25-year-old is the best number nine in the Premier League right now. The former Liverpool defender said:
"When he's in position, sometimes with strikers, they can be a little bit sloppy or a little bit loose in possession. When you see him, he's on the move, he's moving with the ball, he's not just standing in the box, waiting for the ball."
"He can play as the target man, he can score goals, he can make runs in behind, I actually think he could almost play as a No. 10, he could probably almost play with another striker, as he's got the ability to actually drop in and pick the ball."
Carragher concluded:
"He's just been a sensation, and there's been a lot of great signings, we should say under Eddie Howe. He is the best striker in the Premier League right now, and he is, I don't think it's actually close right now, I think he's the real standout."
Isak has been on fire for Newcastle United this season, scoring 13 goals and providing four assists in 20 appearances across competitions. In total, he has scored 48 goals and produced nine assists in 87 appearances for the Magpies.
Liverpool plotting a big move for Premier League defender: Reports
Liverpool are reportedly ready to make a big offer for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi who they view as the long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk. As claimed by Spanish outlet Fichajes (via SPORTbible), the Reds are plotting a £65 million offer for the former Chelsea academy graduate.
The Merseysiders could lose their defensive stalwart Van Dijk at the end of the season with his contract up for expiry. They are understood to be keen on Guehi regardless of whether their skipper stays beyond this season or not.
Guehi has been in demand in recent months, with Newcastle United reportedly making three failed attempts to sign him last summer. Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have all been linked with the England international in recent months.
