Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has opened up on teammate Rodrygo's reaction after being snubbed from the 30-man Ballon d’Or 2024 shortlist. Los Blancos have seven players in the shortlist but Rodrygo has surprisingly been overlooked despite enjoying an excellent last season.
The versatile Brazil international previously admitted that he is upset for missing out on a place in the 30-man shortlist. The 23-year-old insisted that he felt that he deserved a spot on the list as he stated to ESPN:
"I was upset, I think I deserved it. I don't want to belittle the players who are there, but I think I had a place in the 30. It was a surprise... But there's not much I can do, I'm not the one who decides these things."
Rodrygo's Real Madrid teammate Thibaut Courtois has now opened up on the situation as he insisted that the Brazilian is a key player for the Spanish giants. He also said that the former Santos winger does not need to be upset. The Belgium international said, as quoted by Madrid Xtra:
“Journalists put Jude’s, Vini’s, and Mbappé’s letters. But in the dressing room, we know Rodrygo’s importance and quality."
The ex-Chelsea keeper added:
"I don’t think Rodrygo needs to be upset, but if he plays better when he’s upset, then go ahead and be upset (laughs).”
Real Madrid enjoyed a fantastic season last time out as they won both the La Liga title and the Champions League. Quite obviously, they have a heavy representation in the Ballon d'Or list with seven players but Rodrygo is certainly unfortunate to miss out.
Rodrygo has become a key player for Los Blancos over the years following his reported €45 million switch from Santos in 2019. He has made 223 appearances for the Spanish capital club till date, contributing with 55 goals and 43 assists while winning 12 trophies.
Real Madrid leading the chase to land Barcelona target next summer: Reports
Real Madrid are reportedly the favorites to land in-demand Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz next summer. As claimed by German outlet Sport BILD, Los Blancos are leading the chase to land the attacking midfielder who has also attracted interest from Barcelona.
Wirtz enjoyed a fantastic season for Bayer Leverkusen last time out as he helped Xabi Alonso's side win both the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal, staying undefeated domestically. The 21-year-old scored 18 goals and provided 20 assists in 49 games across competitions last season.
The attacking midfielder has picked up from where he left off last season, having scored three goals and provided one assist in five games. Real Madrid reportedly view Wirtz as the long-term successor to Luka Modric in the middle of the park.
