The internet erupted as Kylian Mbappe missed a major chance to double France's lead in their Euro 2024 opener against Austria on Monday (June 17). France won the game 1-0, with the only goal of the night being an own goal from Maximilian Wober in the 38th minute.
Didier Deschamps's men were leading 1-0 when Adrien Rabiot retrieved the ball from the Austrian midfield in the 54th minute and set Mbappe free. The Frenchman collected the ball and accelerated past the Austrian defense to enter the penalty box. However, with only the goalkeeper Patrick Pentz to beat, Mbappe shot the ball wide off the net and missed a golden opportunity to double the lead for Les Blues.
Netizens were shocked by this, with many taking to X to mock the 25-year-old. To supposedly troll him, fans also dug up Mbappe's recent statement about the Euros being tougher than the World Cup.
"No way Haaland is missing that,” a user chimed in.
"What a terrible miss," a fan added.
"Is that Lukaku," another joked.
"Bro ran like a horse to get that only to waste it," a fan added.
"The Lukaku curse," another said.
"Euros are harder to score than the World Cup" one fan mocked.
"Big players don’t miss big chances" another added.
"how can u NOT score this" one wondered.
Kylian Mbappe claimed the Euros are tougher than the World Cup ahead of Euro 2024
Kylian Mbappe recently made a controversial claim about Euro 2024 being a bigger challenge than the World Cup. The statement led to several stalwarts of the game speaking about it, with some agreeing and others disagreeing with the Frenchman.
Speaking at a press conference on June 4, Mbappe said there is more pressure at the World Cup but the Euros are more complicated for him.
“The Euros are complicated. For me, more complicated than a World Cup. Even if there is more pressure at the World Cup. All the teams know each other, we play against each other all the time. Tactically, it is a very similar soccer,” he said (via Bolavip).
Kylian Mbappe has appeared in two consecutive World Cup finals (in 2018 and 2022). He won the coveted trophy in 2018 but lost to Argentina in 2022.
In the previous edition of the Euro in 2020, France bowed out of the tournament in the Round of 16 after losing 5-4 on penalties to Switzerland. It remains to be seen how far Kylian Mbappe can take France in the Euro 2024, with the Les Blues being one of the favorites to win.
