Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has claimed that he's been speaking to his Spain teammate Nico Williams over a potential move to Stamford Bridge. The left-back admitted that he wants to see Williams play for the Blues next season.
Chelsea have been linked with the Athletic Bilbao winger this summer after missing out on Crystal Palace's Michael Olise, who's set to join Bayern Munich ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.
The Blues have now shifted their sights towards Williams. However, Chelsea do face competition from the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona, who are reportedly interested in the player.
Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal has admitted that he hopes to play alongside his international teammate at Camp Nou. Cucurella has now admitted that he would like to share a dressing room with Williams at Stamford Bridge.
“He would be a great signing (for Barcelona), but it all depends on what he wants. I’ve been telling him to sign for Chelsea…. In the end everything depends on him, he is very young, with a lot of experience. I think he will be a great player,” he said (via Football Espana).
Williams had an excellent 2023-24 season with Athletic Bilbao, scoring eight goals and providing 19 assists in 37 La Liga appearances. The 21-year-old has shined at the Euros as well, recording a goal and an assist, both of which came in Spain's 4-1 win over Georgia in the Round of 16.
"I hope he can join us!" - Barcelona star Pedri says Nico Williams would be a 'spectacular signing' amid Chelsea interest
While Cucurella would love to see Williams at Chelsea, the left-back seems outmatched as another Barcelona star has been urging the 21-year-old to sign for the Blaugrana.
Pedri has admitted that Williams would be an excellent addition to Barcelona's squad as they seek to reinforce their squad to prepare for the 2024-25 campaign under new manager Hansi Flick.
"Nico Williams would be a spectacular signing for us at Barcelona, it’d be incredible. He’s a player who is already showing what he’s capable of. I hope he can join us!" he said (via Metro).
When asked whether he's spoken to Williams yet about a potential move to the Blaugrana this summer, Pedri said:
"We don’t talk about it much. It’s a decision that he and Barca have to make. There are a lot of things that have to happen."
Spain will next face Germany in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals on Friday, July 5.
