Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has claimed that Kevin De Bruyne's contract situation is the club's decision and not his business. The Belgian's contract at the Etihad is set to expire in the summer and he's yet to pen a new deal.
During a press conference ahead of the clash against West Ham United on Saturday, Guardiola was asked about De Bruyne's contract situation. He said (via Fabrizio Romano):
"It’s up to the club. It’s not my business."
He added:
"It’s about how he's going to perform until the end of the season, the age that he has, and many things. I think the club has to think about it."
De Bruyne joined City from Wolfsburg for a reported €76 million in August 2015. The midfield sensation is arguably one of the best-attacking midfielders in City's history.
The Belgian midfielder is well-known for his creativity and vision to pinpoint the ball to his teammate in attack. The 33-year-old has also proven to be an attacking midfielder that could score goals. In 399 appearances, he has scored 104 goals and registered 171 assists for City. Despite Manchester City's struggle this season, De Bruyne has scored two goals and provided two assists in 17 games.
"I don't know right now" - says Pep Guardiola on Manchester City's January transfer plans
Pep Guardiola has claimed that he's uncertain if the club would sign players in the ongoing January transfer window. City have struggled this season winning just two of their last 14 games across all competitions.
In a press conference, Guardiola was asked about City's transfer plans in the January transfer window. He said (via City Xtra):
"I don't know right now. It's not easy, it will not be easy. Maybe we'll sign, or maybe we don't sign anyone. So I think the club has to be wise, don't do it for doing it, just to add players.”
He added:
"Of course for the situation that we have and from the perspective of the players that have had consistent injuries for many, many, many times, of course the club has to do it. But I don't know if it will be possible..."
City has suffered several injury setbacks that have arguably affected their performance this season. In the Premier League, they are ranked sixth having registered 31 points from 19 games.
