Former USMNT forward Landon Donovan has dismissed claims that Chelsea can win the Premier League this season. He believes they are too 'young and immature' to go all the way in the title challenge.
The Blues finished 12th and sixth, respectively, in the last two seasons under different managers but have been flying under Enzo Maresca this season. They are fourth in the standings at the halfway point, 10 points behind leaders Liverpool with a game in hand. Some fans and pundits have also put them in the conversation for a potential title challenge.
Landon Donovan, however, has dismissed such claims as he said on his Unfiltered Soccer podcast:
“I really, really want to go on a limb here and say it’s a real headline. [But] I just think they’re just a little young and immature. If this was a year or two from now I’d say I think they could do it. It’s a fake headline but, we’ll see. Maybe it’ll be real.”
The west London side's form has dropped recently as they have one draw and two defeats in their last three league games. They drew 0-0 against Everton before losing 2-1 against Fulham and 2-0 against Ipswich Town.
Pundit explains why Chelsea and Arsenal can't beat Liverpool to Premier League title this season
Owen Hargreaves has backed Liverpool to win the Premier League title this season over Arsenal and Chelsea. He explained that the Reds have experienced players like Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, while the other two sides don't.
He said on Premier League Productions (via Empire of the Kop):
"The biggest thing for me is the reason Arsenal and Chelsea won’t win it, they don’t have any experience like Liverpool. Alisson, Van Dijk, Trent, Robertson, Salah – you’ve got five guys who have been there and done it, as Mo said for years.
"This Liverpool team is perfectly set up, they’ve got a real mix of young players, a brilliant front three but actually, because they can play different every game, they’re going to be hard to stop."
The likes of Salah, Van Dijk, and Alisson Becker played a key role in Liverpool's title triumph under Jurgen Klopp in the 2019-20 season. The Reds have lost just one match across competition this season and appear set to win another title. They will next face Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will next face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday as they look to end their three-game winless run.
