Jamie Carragher has urged Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim to rethink his wing-back strategy. He believes that Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot are the players who suit the system.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said that Mazraoui and Dalot don't think like attacking full-backs, which makes it difficult for Amorim to work with his system. He believes that the two players shouldn't be starting:
“It’s a massive problem, and that tells you have to play one of them in the wingback role. This is obviously a game which they win at Manchester City, but we see the system. Mazraoui and Dalot as the wing backs. In the back five, that’s fine, we just see Amad in that position.
"But when there’s a turnover, look at Martinez, he’s actually telling Dalot you’ve got to get ahead of this (Man City player), you’re a wing back now, you’re not a full-back. Martinez is having to tell him to get forward, and he’s just walking, and that’s the difference. They don’t think like attacking full-backs.”
Fourteenth-placed Manchester United face leaders Liverpool next in the Premier League on January 5 before taking on Arsenal in their FA Cup opener seven days later.
Gary Neville names two Manchester United players who should not play together
Gary Neville has said that Casemiro and Christian Eriksen shouldn't be playing together for Manchester United. He told Sky Sports that the midfielders don't have the legs to run, elaborating:
"Casemiro and (Christian) Eriksen haven't got the legs to get around. Casemiro and Eriksen shouldn't be playing together in the Premier League. It is just so easy. When you saw the Manchester United starting XI, you had to think it would be very difficult for this team to play well. The two wing-backs aren't very good in the attacking part of the pitch.
"The two central midfielders can't run. The back three have no legs. They have been absolutely awful. You are watching the worst pound-for-pound team in the country. There are only three of them who can say they have been alright under Amorim: Dalot, (Noussair) Mazraoui and Amad."
Manchester United lost 2-0 to Newcastle United on Monday night at Old Trafford with goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton in the first half. The Red Devils have won just once in their last five Premier League games.
