Former Inter Miami striker Leonardo Campana explained Luis Suarez's role in his decision to leave the Lionel Messi-led side this year. Campana left the Herons to sign for New England Revolution earlier this month for $2.5 million in General Allocation Money (GAM) divided between 2025 and 2026.

The 24-year-old remained one of Inter Miami's significant players under former coach Tata Martino, contributing nine goals and two assists in 35 outings across competitions in 2024.

However, due to the presence of stalwarts like Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, Campana was often relegated to a backup role. His departure will enable the Herons to make another international signing for 2025 and 2026.

In an interview with Spanish website EFE, Leonardo Campana explained that Luis Suarez's presence had a role to play in his decision to leave Inter Miami. He said (via Inter Miami News):

“I know that I haven’t had many opportunities because of Luis, who for me has been the best striker of the last ten years. It’s not a question of my level, but rather that Luis has obviously always been a scorer in the teams he’s been on, and now he’s renewed his contract.”

Luis Suarez renewed his contract with the Herons in November 2024, with his current deal running until December 2025. The Uruguayan superstar has been decisive for the Florida-based franchise in 2024, contributing 25 goals and 12 assists in 37 outings across competitions.

He played 2803 minutes for the Herons, almost double that of Campana. Suarez was also the club's highest goalscorer in 2024.

New coach Javier Mascherano is also reportedly counting on Luis Suarez as his key striker alongside Lionel Messi. Therefore, Campana's decision to move to New England Revolution due to the potential lack of game-time seems feasible. However, the Herons must look for a replacement for Campana soon to strengthen their attack in 2025.

According to a recent sport by Tuttosport, Manchester City are eyeing a loan move for Lionel Messi in the European January transfer window. Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham is reportedly unlikely to block the move. It is currently off-season for the MLS with the new term to start in February, making the Argentine superstar available for a short while.

Manchester City have suffered a noticeable dip in form this season, as they stand seventh in the Premier League with 27 points after 17 games. The Sky Blues have lost nine out of their last 12 games across all competitions, recording only one win. The aforementioned report suggests that Pep Guardiola is keen on turning things around by bringing Lionel Messi on loan for six months.

Guardiola and Messi enjoyed a magical partnership between 2008 and 2012 at Barcelona. The legendary Argentine is often considered to have been at his peak under the Catalan tactician. Messi scored 211 goals and 94 assists in 219 outings across competitions under Guardiola at Barcelona. The duo also won two UEFA Champions League titles and three LaLigas among other honors.
