England manager Gareth Southgate has responded to the boos that rang out after his side fell to a 0-1 loss to Iceland. The Three Lions fell to defeat in their final friendly game ahead of Euro 2024.
Southgate spoke with the press after the game, telling the correspondent :
“Well, I don't blame them. We have to accept that tonight we didn't play well enough so I don't think we can complain about an adverse reaction when we don't play well enough. What we have to do internally is stay calm, there's lots of reasons for the performance, there are things that we have to learn from and get better.”
Gareth Southgate concluded, saying:
"It's a reminder that, everybody saying we're going to walk to Germany and walk off with this trophy, it's going to be unbelievably hard to do that. You have to have every part of your game right, mentality has to be right, character has to be right, so we stay calm after tonight, but we know the level has to raise.”
England will hope to put their defeat to Iceland behind them ahead of Euro 2024. The Three lions are one of the favourites in the competition and will face Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia in group C.
Gareth Southgate gives update on England defender after injury scare
England manager Gareth Southgate has given an update about the injury situation of John Stones. The Manchester City defender sustained a knock in the first half and was taken off.
The Three lions will rely on Stones in Germany, with the Premier League winner a constant feature of the team. The City man has made 72 appearances for his nation heading to Germany for Euro 2024.
Speaking about the knock sustained by the defender, The England manager said:
“He's, we think, OK. Obviously he had a knock to the ankle earlier in the game and given how close we are to the finals, there's no point in risking anything after half-time, so mainly precautionary.”
The Three Lions went on to lose their game against Iceland, raising questions before they step out against Serbia on the 16th of June. Gareth Southgate will hope Stones makes it back to his English starting lineup before then and help the Euro 2024 favourites to glory for the first time in over seven decades.
