Lionel Messi's former Inter Miami manager Tata Martino reacted to Diego Gomez's decision to leave the MLS club to join Brighton and Hove Albion. The 21-year-old midfielder is set to join the English side in January.

The Paraguayan joined The Herons in July 2023 from Libertad for a reported €2.7 million fee and has joined the English side for €13 million after a fruitful 18-month spell in Miami. He played 40 games for the side, scoring seven times and providing seven assists.

Speaking about his prospective move to the Premier League, his former manager told The Athletic:

“This is my own personal opinion, I believe it’s the right team and the right league for Diego. If I had to choose a better alternative for him I don’t think I’d have one. Brighton have a new manager. He’s young and I think all those things will be good for Diego.”

Gomez played 1761 minutes across 27 games for Inter Miami with Lionel Messi, averaging 2.19 points per game and combining for three goals. He hopes to replicate the form that helped him help his MLS side win the Supporters Shield last season.

When Inter Miami star Lionel Messi named the player that knows him best

In a 2018 interview, then-Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi revealed which teammates understood him best. The Argentine maestro named Spanish fullback Jodi Alba as the player with whom he shared the best connection, citing their almost telepathic connection.

Alba played 375 games for Barcelona and The Herons with Messi, averaging 2.23 points per game and combining with the Argentine star for 41 goals.

Speaking to Catalunya Radio (via Barca's official website), the Argentine great said:

"Jordi Alba knows me to perfection, He knows when I will give him a no-look pass. I have a special connection with him."

Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba now play for Inter Miami, and recently helped the side win the Supporter's Shield trophy. The duo will compete in the expanded version of the FIFA Club World Cup next year in the United States of America.
