Manchester United legend Gary Neville has issued a verdict on the side after their 0-2 defeat at home to Newcastle United on Monday, December 30. The Red Devils will end the year just seven points above the drop zone after suffering a fourth successive defeat, leading to worry within the club.
Ruben Amorim's side were outmuscled, outplayed, and comfortably second-best as they timidly surrendered to a defeat at Old Trafford against the Magpies. Speaking with Sky Sports during the game, Neville expressed his disappointment at the team, branding them as the worst in the league.
"You are watching the worst pound-for-pound football club in the country. They are that bad," Neville said.
Manchester United were without the suspended duo of Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte in midfield, and their lack of physicality was ruthlessly exposed at home. Summer signing Joshua Zirkzee started the game but was taken off after just 33 minutes after failing to have an impact, once again.
Newcastle were ahead inside four minutes at Old Trafford, as Alexander Isak scored his 11th goal in 12 matches, continuing his incredible form. The Magpies found a second goal 15 minutes later through Joelinton, who converted a cross from Anthony Gordon.
Manchester United are in 14th place in the league with 22 points after 19 rounds of matches in the 2024-25 season. The Red Devils are separated from the relegation zone by just seven points and could find themselves in an unlikely relegation battle in the second half of the season.
Manchester United reach historic lows in defeat to Newcastle United
Manchester United have made some unwanted history after suffering a 0-2 defeat at home to Newcastle United in the Premier League. Goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton ensured that the Red Devils tasted defeat in their final match of 2024. They have now lost four successive games and six in their last eight across all competitions.
Ruben Amorim's side lost a third successive home league game, following defeats to Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth, for the first time since February 1979. They conceded 18 goals in December, the most they have conceded in a single month of action since 1964.
Since Amorim resumed duties as Manchester United head coach, only Southampton have lost more games (seven) than the Red Devils' six defeats across all competitions. He also became the first coach in over 100 years to lose five of his first eight league matches in charge of the Red Devils.
