Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has opened up on his decision to reject a transfer to Liverpool in the summer. The Spaniard said that the Reds' interest caught him 'by surprise', but added that there is 'no need to rush' into a move to a top-class European side.
A product of Sociedad's academy, Zubimendi has been a regular starter for La Real since the 2020-21 campaign. A reliable defensive midfielder, renowned for his tough tackling, footballing IQ and pinpoint passing, he has made 209 appearances for his boyhood side across all competitions.
Over the past few seasons, the 25-year-old has attracted interest from multiple Premier League juggernauts including Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool. The latter even made a concrete move for his services in the summer, only to be rejected by the player himself.
Explaining the decision in a recent conversation with El Diario Vasco, Zubimendi said (via GOAL):
"I went on vacation, and it caught me by surprise. It wasn't something I had planned. I reacted when the situation arose. It was an uncomfortable time for me but I weighed the pros and cons and concluded that the best option was to stay. I don't believe in 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunities. If you're good and want to achieve something, it will come to you."
"There's no need to rush. I looked at my personal progression, who I am, and the club's project. I stayed because I knew this season would be important for me in the team, and I still had steps to take. It wasn't that hard of a decision. There were many reasons for my decision, but I was selfish and thought about what was best for me – and that was staying," Zubimendi concluded.
At the moment, Liverpool have three natural defensive midfielders in their squad - Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch, and Tyler Morton. While Zubimendi would be a valuable addition to their squad, the Reds are likely to focus on improving their defensive stocks in the January transfer window.
Liverpool identify Serie A midfielder as potential Martin Zubimendi alternative - Reports
According to reports from Italian media outlet Tutto Mercato, Liverpool are interested in making a move for Torino midfielder Samuele Ricci.
The 23-year-old has attracted the interest of multiple top European sides with his consistent performances in Serie A. He has made 96 appearances for Torino across all competitions, turning heads with his ball-carrying ability and defensive awareness.
While Liverpool remain interested in their main transfer target, Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi, they have earmarked Ricci as a potential alternative option. However, they face competition from fellow Premier League side Manchester City and Chelsea for the Italian's services.
Ricci's contract with Torino lasts until June 2026. It is believed that a fee in the region of €30 million will be accepted by the Italian outfit.
