Jamie Carragher has acknowledged that he would have given Virgil van Dijk the Man of the Match award for Liverpool's 2-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday, December 1. The Englishman was responding to a dig from Mohamed Salah, who claimed that the Reds legend would not have named him the best player on the pitch.
Taking to X, Carragher insisted he would have picked van Dijk over Salah, who scored a goal and provided an assist. He posted:
Carragher shared that he had no issues with the two Liverpool players following their comments on the contract status. He claimed that the duo, whose Liverpool contract ends at the end of the season, should respect the club as they made them the players they are today and said on Sky Sports:
"I have no problem with Salah and Van Dijk. They are two of the greatest for L'pool. L'pool are a club run by data. I'm not saying he shouldn't get a two-year deal or give him big money. He's on big money now. The club is not built on giving them what they want. That's where the success of the club has come from. They are ahead of the game. Buying Mo Salah for £40 million when no-one else looked at him because they are ahead of the game. L'pool, keep doing what you are doing. You move the dial for a Salah or Van Dijk."
Goals from Cody Gakpo and Salah helped Liverpool beat City 2-0 and move 11 points clear at the top of the table.
Jamie Carragher called Mohamed Salah selfish for Liverpool contract comments
Jamie Carragher was furious with Mohamed Salah for his comments on the Liverpool contract status. He claimed the former Chelsea man should not have spoken out as they had two big games against Manchester City and Real Madrid coming up.
"I must say I am very disappointed with Mo Salah. L'pool have Real Madrid midweek [in the Champions League ] and Man City at the weekend. That's the story right now. If he keeps putting comments out, his agent puts out cryptic messages, that is selfish. That is thinking about themselves and not the football club," Carragher told Sky Sports last week.
Salah once again acknowledged that the contract talks are in his head and said on Sunday:
"Honestly, it's in my head. Until now this is the last City game I will play for L'pool so I was just going to enjoy it. The atmosphere was incredible so I will enjoy every second here. Hopefully we just win the league and will see what will happen."
Liverpool won their matches against Real Madrid and Manchester City but the contract status remains the same with van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also kept waiting.
