Former Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has summed up his feelings after watching his erstwhile team's 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield. The 36-year-old, who currently plays in Australia, also had a message for the Red Devils' captain Bruno Fernandes.
United were widely expected to lose to the Reds, who had the home advantage and have been in brilliant form throughout the season. It did not help that the Red Devils were also coming into the game with a shocking run of four losses in a row, across all competitions.
The match, which took place yesterday (January 5), saw Manchester United open the scoring in the second half, through Lisandro Martinez (52'). Liverpool turned things around quickly and efficiently, as Cody Gakpo equalized (59') and Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty spot to put them in the lead (70').
It was the hosts' game to win, but Amad Diallo was in the right place at the right time to clinch the equalizer for the visitors (80'). Despite both sides having big chances to find the win, the game eventually ended in a draw. Afterwards, Bruno Fernandes shared pictures of the match on his Instagram account, and Juan Mata commented:
"Proud" with a heart emoji
Despite getting a point from the Liverpool clash, Manchester United have now gone four games without a win in the Premier League. They have picked up just one win in their last seven league games.
Bruno Fernandes reacts to Manchester United's draw against Liverpool
Bruno Fernandes has reacted to the Red Devils' draw against the Reds at Anfield. Despite being the underdogs ahead of the game, the captain shared his disappointment in missing out on a win and failing to show consistency in recent games.
In an interview with Sky Sports after the match, he explained that the criticism against the Mancunian club was fair, adding that they should not be pleased with the draw. Fernandes said (via BBC):
"We have been criticised, and fairly. Our position in the table says it all, we have lost too many points. Even today we can't be happy with a point... I'm pretty upset. If we show this level at Liverpool, first in the league, why can't we do this everywhere? It frustrates me."
Manchester United currently sit in 13th place on the Premier League table, as they struggle to find wins and break out of the mid-table. They are far from their Anfield rivals, who currently lead the table with an impressive six-point gap over second-placed Arsenal.
