Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has urged record-breaking midfielder Cole Palmer to keep up his good work in the aftermath of their 4-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur (December 8). The English defender was chosen to give his teammate the Man of the Match award following his brace against Spurs.
Enzo Maresca's side showed equal amounts of flair and grit to recover from a two-goal deficit away from home inside 11 minutes and win in swashbuckling fashion. A big reason for their win was the display of their attackers, particularly the efficiency of Palmer in front of goal in the second half.
The former Manchester City man scored two nerveless penalties to become the player with the best 100% penalty conversion rate in Premier League history, toppling Yaya Toure. After the game, Colwill had a simple message for him as he handed him the Man of the Match award as announced by Sky Sports.
"Keep saving us," he said.
Colwill and Palmer played together for the England U-21 team that won the U-21 Euros in 2023, weeks before the latter left Manchester City for Chelsea. He has hit London like a storm, instantly becoming one of the league's best players by every attacking metric.
Cole Palmer has already scored 11 goals in the league this season, exactly half of the tally he managed in the 2023-24 season for the Blues, after 15 games. The 22-year-old also became the youngest player in the club's history to reach 50 goal contributions in the league, doing so in the game against Tottenham.
Palmer continues to be a very important player for Chelsea, a fact Colwill and the rest of his teammates continue to acknowledge. The club has also seen this, hence their decision to extend his contract and offer him improved wages in the summer.
Cole Palmer makes Chelsea history in win over Tottenham
Cole Palmer earned another spot in Chelsea's history books after scoring twice in their win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The England international scored two penalties in the second half to help his side overcome a 2-0 deficit to win 4-3 away from home.
By scoring against Southampton midweek, he had closed in on club legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's record for the most league goal contributions in a calendar year for the club. Hasselbaink managed 25 goals and 11 assists in 2001, but Palmer's brace against Spurs took him to 25 goals and 13 assists this year.
Palmer has already become the first player in league history to score four times in the first half of a game this season, and is thriving under former youth coach Enzo Maresca. The midfielder continues to be a key player for the Blues as they look to return to the summit of English football.
