Andy Robertson has joked that he gave away a penalty to give Caoimhin Kelleher something to do in Liverpool's 2-0 win against Real Madrid. The Irish goalkeeper ensured the Reds kept a clean sheet with a fine stop to deny the out-of-form French forward.
Alexis Mac Allister (52') and Cody Gakpo (76') were on target as Arne Slot's men continued their perfect start to their Champions League campaign. Kelleher impressed in goal, making three saves on the night.
The 26-year-old was called into action after Robertson brought Lucas Vazquez down in the box. He guessed the right way, and Mbappe's night went from bad to worse.
Robertson spoke after the game about the penalty, and he said (via MadridUniversal):
"The penalty I conceded? Kelleher was bored so I thought, why don't I give my friend something to do?"
Liverpool sit top of the Champions League table with five wins from as many games. They were much the better team at Anfield against the reigning European champions, who are enduring a difficult season.
Mbappe put in a lackluster performance amid a nightmare start at the Santiago Bernabeu. He struggled against a resilient Reds team who are steamrolling towards the knockout phase.
"Obviously I felt confident” - Kelleher sheds light on Mbappe penalty save in Liverpool’s win over Real Madrid
Kelleher gave his thoughts on saving Mbappe's penalty in Liverpool's 2-0 win against Real Madrid after the game. He spoke to club media about his mindset when the France captain stepped up to take the spot-kick (via liverpool.com):
"For me, I don’t really look at the player too much. Obviously I felt confident, I’ve saved two in the last week or so, so yeah, I was confident and thankfully I went the right way again."
Kelleher is a penalty specialist who has a habit of coming to the fore for the Reds in such situations. He was the hero in a 6-5 penalty shootout win over Chelsea (0-0 A.E.T) in the 2022 FA Cup final.
The Irishman wouldn't have been playing against Real Madrid if Alisson Becker were fit. The Brazilian shot-stopper is sidelined with a hamstring injury but Slot's backup has more than covered for him.
Jurgen Klopp, who departed Anfield in the summer, once hailed Kelleher as 'the best No.2 in the world'. With displays like last night's it's easy to understand why he's so highly admired by the Merseyside giants.
