Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has spoken about the real reason behind his decision to leave for Barcelona. He notably left the Wanda Metropolitano in 2019, opting for a stint at Camp Nou.

However, he lasted just two seasons at Camp Nou, returning to Madrid on loan in 2021 before completing a permanent transfer. His time at Barcelona ended with one trophy, the Copa del Rey in 2021.

However, on an individual level, he struggled to meet expectations, scoring 22 goals in 74 La Liga games for the Blaugrana. Speaking about his decision to leave Atletico, Griezmann said in an interview with the club media (via Football Espana):

“I decided to leave because I had reached my mental limit. I had to leave, and you always think that outside is better. I wanted to try, but after a few months, I realised I was not as happy as in Madrid and at Atleti.
“I was angry with myself and I had to work hard, and be quiet. I became ‘small’ for the first few months back here. (Fernando) Torres told me when I came back that if I left everything on the field the fans would respect me."

He went on, revealing that he made a mistake and was glad to have returned from Barcelona:

“It’s a joy to be here, I made a mistake, as can happen to anyone, but I will do everything so the fans are proud of their No.7. We need you from now to the end of the season, thanks for the love, and we will enjoy it together.”

Antoine Griezmann has won three trophies with Atleti, but the forward is yet to lift the La Liga title.

Barcelona cannot sign major transfer target Nico Williams: Victor Font

The Blaugrana spent a huge sum to sign Antoine Griezmann in 2019, meeting his €120 million release clause. In the years that have passed, finances have become tight, with the club now struggling to sign their top targets.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta openly made it clear that they were interested in Athletic Club's Nico Williams, who helped Spain win EURO 2024. The winger impressed for his club last season, raking in 11 assists in La Liga, and his performances for Spain further enhanced his reputation.

However, former Barca presidential candidate Victor Font has told the Athletic that the club cannot afford Williams. He said (via Teamtalk):

“I wish we could sign Nico Williams because that’s what we need. The president has said that it is possible, but that is not true. Today it cannot be done. We hope that it will be possible tomorrow. But today, it is not."

Barcelona will be hoping they can sort out their financial concerns in due course, so it does not affect their transfer plans.
