Inter Miami have shared an incredible tribute to Lionel Messi after the forward completed one year since joining the club. The Argentine forward is presently out of action with an injured ankle, which he suffered while on international duty with Argentina earlier this summer.
Messi swapped Europe for the USA when he left PSG to sign with Inter Miami on July 21, 2023. The 37-year-old made a significant difference to the MLS outfit, instantly attracting attention on and off the pitch. His debut was a memorable one as well, as he scored a stoppage-time free-kick to win the game against Cruz Azul.
Inter Miami recognize what Messi has done for their club since his arrival as a free agent, and shared their appreciation on social media. The club's official X account posted a touching video, showing the journey of the legendary forward in the year since joining the club.
"Lionel arrived, and changed our lives"
The tribute to Lionel Messi comes just a day after the forward was celebrated by the club for being the most decorated footballer ever. He received a framed present showing his 45 title wins as a professional before the side faced Chicago Fire.
Messi has caused many top players to buy into the Inter Miami project, including old Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, and Jordi Alba. Also, young stars like Federico Redondo, Diego Gomez, and several others have moved to Miami to play alongside Messi.
Former Chelsea striker slams Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi over Argentina racism row
Former Chelsea star Carlton Cole has accused Lionel Messi of selfishness for failing to speak about the racism row surrounding the Argentina national team. The forward helped his country win the 2024 Copa America before parting ways with the team after the final.
While on the bus, the team was filmed singing racist and transphobic songs, leading to widespread criticism and accusations of racism. Messi was not on the bus and has stayed away from the topic, which is what has angered Cole, as he told talkSPORT:
"Argentina have got someone who is renowned as probably the best footballer to ever grace the beautiful game - Lionel Messi.
"We've got a look at Messi and you say, you know what, Messi come out. We need to hear you. I need you to. You've got to speak up about this.
'Because this is more than Enzo. Messi is the main guy there. He's the captain. He needs to come out and say something about this behaviour.
'Otherwise, it's just like he doesn't care. He doesn't care how I feel, he doesn't care how some of his black teammates he's had in the past feel.
"That just shows me that he's selfish. He needs to come out and say something.
"i condemn him. Simple. I condemn Messi."
Chelsea are conducting their own internal investigation on the involvement of Argentine star Enzo Fernandez in the row. FIFA and the English FA are also expected to contribute to the possible potential of punishment for the midfielder.
