Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah said he voted Vinicius Junior the 2024 Best FIFA Men's Player of the Year because the Brazilian deserved to win the award. Vinicius was in strong contention for the award with Rodri, Jude Bellingham, and Lionel Messi.
During a recent interview, Salah was asked why he voted for Vinicius. He replied (via Madrid Xtra on X):
"Vinicius Jr is a very good player, that’s why. He’s improving every year and hopefully he can continue. I voted for him because he deserves it."
As Egypt's captain, Salah voted, and his preferred option for the award was the Brazilian winger. According to FIFA's publication, Vinicius won the prize with 48 points. While Rodri finished second with 43 points, Bellingham came third, having secured 37 points.
In the 2023-24 campaign, the Brazilian scored 25 goals and provided 12 assists in 40 appearances for Real Madrid. He also won a few silverware, including the LaLiga and UEFA Champions League titles.
Meanwhile, Rodri scored nine goals and registered 14 assists in 50 appearances for Manchester City. He won the 2023-24 Premier League title and the 2024 Euro competition with Spain.
Finally, Bellingham scored 23 goals and provided 13 assists in 43 games for Real Madrid. He won several trophies, including the 2023-24 UCL and the LaLiga title.
How has Mohamed Salah performed for Liverpool this season?
The Egyptian is arguably the best-performing attacker in the Premier League this season. In 26 appearances, he has scored 20 goals and registered 17 assists for Liverpool.
In the Premier League, the right-winger is the top-scorer having scored 17 goals. He's currently leading the chart ahead of Erling Haaland of Manchester City who has scored 14 goals. While Cole Palmer of Chelsea is ranked third with 12 goals so far.
Given his decent start across numerous competitions, he's on course to be nominated for several awards this season. If he could remain consistent and help Liverpool win the Premier League title and probably the UCL title, he has a decent shot at the 2024-25 Ballon d'Or.
