Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer, who has been compared to Manchester City man Rodri. The Reds are interested in adding quality to their midfield, having failed to land their major midfield targets in the summer of 2023.
Feyenoord man Wieffer was one of the stars of Arne Slot's team that won the KNVB Cup in the 2023-24 season. The defensive midfielder has become highly sought-after, with the likes of AC Milan and Brighton & Hove Albion keen on him.
Brighton have agreed a €30 million deal with Feyenoord for the midfielder, with personal terms all that are left to conclude the deal. Liverpool are looking to hijack the deal for Wieffer, as reported by Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, but may find a deal difficult.
The Reds are set for a new era following the exit of Jurgen Klopp as manager at the end of the 2023-24 season. The club's new CEO of football, Michael Edwards, is working hard to complete the deal for the 24-year-old midfielder, who seems destined for a move to Brighton.
Mats Wieffer helped Slot's Feyenoord to finish second in the Eredivisie, and his performances have drawn parallels to Manchester City's metronome Rodri. Wieffer is known for his impressive ball-winning ability, passing, and ball progression, and has also been compared to Sergio Busquets.
The Reds failed to sign both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia last summer before eventually signing Wataru Endo from Stuttgart. The loss of Thiago Alcantara for free this summer has necessitated the signing of another midfielder for the Reds.
Wieffer will cost in the region of €30 million and will only join the Reds if they can reach an agreement with him ahead of the Seagulls. The Dutchman will likely move to the Premier League this summer with one of the sides.
Liverpool legend wants club to sign Serie A star
Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann has revealed that he wishes for the club to sign Napoli ace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia this summer. The Georgian winger appears to be unsettled at club level, judging by comments by his agent and father in recent weeks.
Hamann was quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying that he believes that Kvaratskhelia will be the perfect replacement for Mohamed Salah at Anfield. He wants the club to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding him and secure a deal for him.
He said:
“I like Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, I like him a lot. I read an interview and his dad said that they need to find a solution regarding his future this summer. Everything indicates that he will be leaving Napoli and that his time at the club is coming to an end.
“He’s a very humble guy. He’d be brilliant at Liverpool, and, if you’re talking about Salah replacements, then he’s probably as close to a perfect replacement that Liverpool could find.”
Kvaratskhelia was impressive for Georgia at Euro 2024, helping them reach the Round of 16, where they lost to Spain. He scored once but was a talismanic figure for his country in Europe's biggest international competition.
